The Summer Scientific Campus Program, an initiative of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports and FECYT, facilitated by the Science and Technology Park Foundation of the ULPGC, offers an experience for students in the 4th year of Compulsory Secondary Education and the 1st year of Secondary Education to carry out projects to science in its different disciplines and modalities.
With the Research Group on Technologies, Management and Environmental Biogeochemistry, projects related to marine acidification and beach microplastic studies have been developed.
La Miniferia de los Océanos (“the oceans little Fair”), is an event held in the seaside neighborhood of San Cristóbal for the Day of the Oceans, organized by the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The programm comprises several ludica-educational activities related to the oceans where, in addition, the work and research concerning marine sciences ius shown by different research groups and organizations. In our case, we brought some materials to raise awareness of the acidification of the oceans and the marine debris pollution issue, with special concern on microplastics.
The international project G-Cubes, captained by the Swiss artist Harald Reichenbach, visited Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in October 2016 with the aim of, within the framework of its peculiar return to the world, collect marine garbage and turn it into artistic pieces of economic value at the same time the awareness is raised within the schools and galleries. We had the opportunity to participate in this project with a sample of the research carried out in the research group regarding the problem of marine litter and microplastics, a global environmental problem that recognizes no borders, neither by sea nor by land.
Many of the projects we work on are transnational cooperation projects, especially in the Macaronesian region. Thus, the results are very focused on the transfer of knowledge, exchange of experiences and strengthening of the work areas based on the enrichment of information with initiatives from different places and different entities.
